Arnold, Stephen H. November 15, 1946-August 12, 2013

Stephen H. Arnold was born November 15, 1946 to Frederick P. and Catherine Hughes Arnold in Port Chester, NY. He graduated from Harrison H.S. in 1965. On June 26, 1967 he met Barbara Sarles and they were married on May 9, 1970. They spent 43 cherished years together. Steve lives on through his wife and best friend, Barbara, their children and their three grandchildren; his son, Keith Stephen Arnold and granddaughter Emily Alexandra of Wappingers Falls, NY and his daughter, Amy Michelle and her husband John Graves and granddaughters Mallory Catherine and Abbey May of Auburn, MA. He treasured every one of them individually, fiercely proud and appreciative of each one’s unique talents and personalities. He loved his little cat Annie so much. Steve is also survived by his sister, Janice Nayler and family. He was predeceased by his older brother, Frederick, several years ago.

Steve worked for Gannett Westchester Rockland Newspapers for 35 years, first in the composing room then later as a computer services technician. To the family who donated their loved ones’ kidneys on February 2, 1996, your precious gift changed our lives forever. All of us, especially Dad, have had you in our thoughts every day since. We have been truly blessed, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A true master of the art of conversation, Steve loved nothing more than to make us all laugh. With his quick wit & creativity, he concocted many a tall tale for our listening pleasure. A big kid himself, you were never too old to just be silly- and he was a pro at it. Aside from spending time with us, among the simple things that made him happy were puttering with his muscle cars, going for scenic drives with Barb, classic Rock & Roll, being Mr. Fix-It, writing (especially at 3am), Ocean City, MD, chatting, basking in the sunshine on his patio and the unmistakable roar of his GTO engine. Thank you, Dad, for always being there for us, no matter what & without question.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in the name of Stephen H. Arnold may be made to:
The PKD Foundation, 8330 Ward Parkway, Suite 510, Kansas City, MO 64114.

Foster, Kate (Sullivan) a residential architect and designer with a lively curiosity that ranged from classical art to Eastern philosophy, died on Jan. 18 at Northern Westchester Hospital from complications of breast cancer treatment.

Ms. Foster, 62, who was professionally active in Westchester County for nearly 30 years, delighted architecture clients with solutions that maximized living space and displayed a deep understanding of how people move in their homes.

Born Mary Kathleen Sullivan in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ms. Foster was the youngest of six children of William and Florence Sullivan. After high school in Cincinnati, she attended Rosemont College near Philadelphia and the University of Cincinnati School of Design, where she earned a degree in interior design. During a 1977 internship with the international architecture firm of HOK in New York, Ms. Foster decided to stay in New York and become an architect.

It was that year that she met and married food-industry entrepreneur Alain Foster. The couple lived in a loft in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood while Ms. Foster obtained her architecture degree at Pratt Institute and launched her professional career.

In 1983, while expecting the first of their two daughters, the couple moved to Bedford, renovating an antique farmhouse on Route 22 near Fox Lane. Ms. Foster worked with partners in White Plains and Bronxville and then founded her own firm, Kate Foster Architect, working from home as she raised her young daughters. She had a love of such classical forms as Greek columns and porticos but also embraced tenets of feng shui, the ancient Chinese system of determining the most auspicious site for a building.

The Fosters spent three years in Belgium in the early 1990s, where Ms. Foster indulged her love of painting and participated in international service organizations. Throughout her life, she continued painting, traveling and entertaining her legions of friends. She also was a spirited tennis player and member of the Pound Ridge Tennis Club. In 2010, the Fosters moved from Bedford to Pawling.
