I've known Bill for the last seven years or so. Out relationship started as a professional one and quickly morphed to one of fishing and visiting out in the East Quogue area of Long Island. He always had a kind word to say when appropriate and we shared many good times together. I will miss Bill (Will, Billy, Willy, etc.) every day and feel honored to have him as a friend as long as I did. Rich Baldwin (631-987-6710 - cell)

Growing up friends with the Canavans was an event. Every get together, a blast and a three ring circus. Billy and his larger than life personality and gigantic heart was always center stage and he always had this knack for finding funny ways to look at life. Billy could make anyone laugh a full belly laugh. I will forever remember sledding at the golf course, snowball fights, playing football and virtually any sport with Billy. He made you feel good while trouncing you at the same time and laughing so hard you couldn’t breathe. He was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known finding ways to get to the heart of what really mattered to you or anyone. He will forever be in Our hearts. My deepest condolences to the family.

Billy was one of the best humans I have ever met. He was funny, kind-hearted, easy to talk to. My best friend is heartbroken at losing her brother so suddenly - and the world lost one of the greats. So glad Annie was with him and gave him the love and joy of a heslthy partnership that he always deserved to have. Rest in peace Billy. We will miss you dearly. -Trish and Tim McKeon

Bill was a college in the environment business and we recently became a friend. He was one of those people you could not help but love his energy and insight on complicated issues. He was someone who had solutions with complicated remediation issues. He was simply one of the best in our field. Besides being a great hydro geologist he was a remarkable person. My condolences go out to his kids, family and everyone who got to know Bill. You made this world a better place my friend.

I wanted to add, I was so sad and shocked to hear of Bill’s passing, I will miss our chats while cutting his hair and text messaging about high school football. Especially he was always making predictions about our Somers Tuskers. Thank you Bill for being you and for your loyalty. May you rest in eternal peace. XO

I am so sorry for your loss Mallory, Meghan and Owen. I cut your father hair off and on for over 20 years, and I just wanted you all to know the whole conversation was always all about all of you. He loved you all so very much and he was so proud of all of you! Nothing made him happier than cooking for you and coaching you all sometimes, and spending time together. You know he was a great Dad and he was a great man and person. I hope you all keep his legacy alive inside of all of you and hold your memories close to your heart and share stories of your memories always, laugh and cry and tell them over and over again. God bless you all our prayers are with you at this time and always. XO

So many good connections with Bill. We bonded in the Freshmen dorm and in geology classes, particularly Roger Thomas's classes. We did not keep in touch much after school though, but he was always Bill when we saw each other at an F&M reunion or something. We felt no time pass in between our connections. I have his cell phone number in my phone, and it has always been comforting knowing it is there.
One memory was when I went to a Grateful Dead concert in VA. I had a geology field trip on Sunday that I needed to go to (I was a conscientious student), so I skipped the Saturday concert and problem-solved how to get back. I found a couple at the concert driving to William and Mary where I knew the F&M lacrosse team was playing on Saturday, and I knew that Bill was going to be there. I found Bill, and he talked to his coach about me driving back on the bus. Bill and I sat in the front seat behind the coach while the rest of the team carried on. I got back to school, and Bill and I went to our Roger Thomas geology field trip together the next day.
Photographed here is when Bill and I connected in the Berkshires at my parents place in the woods. We are brushing our teeth together on the back deck.
Bill, so stunned and saddened that you have moved on, but I am so grateful for my time on earth with you, and I hope that one day we will connect again.

This world has lost one of the best there ever was. Irreplaceable. Every time we spoke or met, another plan was hatched to hunt, fish, or eat oysters. We chased fish on the ocean and on the Delaware River, and quail in Georgia. He single-handedly pushed oysters to the brink of extinction. He loved family, people, sports, coaching, music, cooking, humor, fishing, hunting, skiing, travel, and pretty much everything else in life. Played the guitar. He was one of the hardest workers I ever met, one of the smartest people I ever knew, and the first to make fun of everyone - himself foremost. Never a dull moment. Honest to a fault. Called it as he saw it. There is a hole in my heart. When the rest of us meet him in the afterlife, the place will likely be fished out.

I worked with Bill / Willy at LBG (environmental firm) from 1990-1994. Such a terrific guy & friend. Always with a smile and a joke. No stranger to a gripe, though - at least at that time. I remember sitting beside him in a hazardous materials training class when the instructor told us that the first sign of overexposure to gasoline vapors was irritability. We both turned our heads and looked at each other, then simultaneously looked back to the instructor and said, "What's the second?" I have a couple other stories I shouldn't write on a remembrance wall :). So sorry to to hear of his sudden passing. I haven't even talked to him since 1994 but his loss leaves a hole in my heart. My deepest condolences to his children, family and friends. The obituary is so true - he never knew a stranger. I wish I could come to the service but we're in NC now and it's just not possible. Thanks Willy - you made my life better and I'm a better person for having known you. May you rest in peace. Steve Ritz, Durham, NC.

Bill, you were not just a cherished friend, but a big brother and mentor whose presence was larger than life. Your influence on me is indescribable. You were always just a phone call away, ready with a solution for any need. I will miss our lively banter and shared grievances as business owners. I am so grateful to have had you in my life. Rest in peace.

Oh man. You were a brother I never had. You were there for me after Molly passed. If our happiness in life is about the quality of relationships - and it is, man you had that nailed Billy. Your uncanny gift of connecting with everyone through all walks of life is what it means to be a good person. In a world of division, you were a uniter. You were the best fishin' buddy, music buddy, just plain old buddy I could have ever wished for and I am so grateful that we were classmates, team mates and pals for life. Still Willin' my man. I'm still willin'.
My condolences to the Canavan family. You were everything to Billy and I loved hearing about the Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. May your shared love of Billy keep you during this awfully difficult time.
If I can every be of service to you, call me. 978-270-0819.

The best brother in-law a girl could ever want, he was my brother. Always there always had an ear and even saved me when I attempted to bring a real 9 ft tree in my house on my own, that weighed soooo much that when I put it in the stand it was not actually fully in, climbed on a ladder put the star on and the tree came down crushing me lol with my 6 year old screaming “mommy you ruined Christmas”, the only person I thought to call was Wilhelm, he showed up, put the tree “properly” in the stand and saved my Christmas! And my son stopped crying! That among too many times to mention this man came to my rescue, he was one the best selfless caring person I ever knew and was proud to call him my brother. I wiill miss you always Wilhelm …love your favorite sister in law Kerry… ok maybe the neediest, love you always and the memories we shared. Xo goodbye for nnow my brother

I am saddened to hear the news of Bills passing. We played Lacrosse together at good old HHS. I am pretty sure the Bill was the one who gave me the nickname “ The Akeman” that has echoed throughout my life. It was an honor to be a teammate of such an amazing player, and man. May he rest in peace.
