Obituary of Nistor Ardeleanu

Nistor Ardeleanu, (86), of Rego Park, NY passed away on April 9, 2024.

Nistor was born to Dumitru and Clemansa Ardeleanu, on January 4, 1938, in Braila, Romania.  He graduated in June 1962 with a Masters degree in Economics and Accounting from the University of Bucharest’s Academy of Economic Studies.  Upon graduation, he worked as an Economic Advisor and a career Diplomat with the Ministry of Economic Affairs. During this time, he spent several years in Nigeria and travelled extensively to many countries on the African and European continents, something that he enjoyed tremendously.

In February 1982, he immigrated to the United States (with his family joining him from communist Romania in 1984) and he spent the remainder of his career in New York City, working as an Accountant with the Ritz Carlton hotel, with Roosevelt Hotel and with the Loews Regency hotel from where he retired in January 2008.

Well into his later years, Nistor was very active and enjoyed a social life befitting someone much younger. Some of his favorite activities were dining out and dancing with his long-term partner Teresa Ortiz McLarney, and attending services at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, NY where he was a member for the past 25 years. Other than his faith and social activities, he loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Chloe (whom he affectionately called “Scumpi”), and whom he adored beyond measure.  He also loved coffee (with way too much sugar), any type of pastry, Romanian and European history, and soccer. He never missed an opportunity to send a thoughtful greeting card or to call just to say hello.  As a lifelong Republican, he always had time to debate the pros of free-market economics with his friends and family.

Nistor is survived by his son Dan Ardeleano, daughter-in-law Sara, and granddaughter Chloe. He is also survived by his daughter Simona Cassatly, her husband Ryan, and grandsons Samuel, Hunter and Harry, as well as his dear friend Teresa Ortiz McLarney. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eugenia Ardeleanu, who passed away in 1995.

His honesty and integrity, as well as his loving presence in our lives will be dearly missed.
