Mr. Jakola was my favorite Math teacher. That includes high school, college and grad school (I became a dentist). I was in his class as a junior and also as a senior at Fox Lane (I graduated in 1975). I'm not sure just what it was but I understood his teaching clearly. Remember logarithms? I do -- because of him.
In one of my many classes with him we took a McDonalds/WABC sticker and put it sticky side up on his chair. He sat on it so it was stuck on his pants. Every time he turned toward the blackboard the class would erupt in laughter. He didn't know why until someone tipped him off. He didn't get mad but simply said "Now that I'm no longer a walking ad for McDonalds's let's get on with it".
He was a good friend of Dr. Ben Cohn (as was my family) so I saw him at Ben's funeral (2000). It was 25 years later but he was still a great guy to talk to.
My condolences to all who knew him -- and also to those who were lucky enough to have him as a teacher.

I remember a while back meeting Connie and Al for a lovely lunch at Peppino's to celebrate Susan O'Connor's birthday! We had such an enjoyable afternoon and Al was so interesting to talk too! We loved hearing about their many travels! Al and Connie were so kind and thoughtful, always looking out for their neighbor,Sue! As a former teacher Al has earned a special place in heaven, for teachers are angels ! S.Maureen Goff

When I was in the Pleasantville Music Theatre production of "Oklahoma!" in 1970, I was in high school. I lived in Bedford Hills with my family. Al kindly drove me home from rehearsals that often ran very late. Otherwise, I would have had to take a train home from Pleasantville to Bedford Hills. I remember his wife Connie very well. I am so happy that they married! Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of a very kind man. May his memory be a blessing. Francesca Hagadus
