Obituary of Ciro Russo
Russo, Ciro, 82, of Somers, NY, formerly of Rosedale, died Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Phelps Hospital after confronting Alzheimer’ disease with dignity and courage for over ten years.
Ciro was born on February 21, 1937 in Brooklyn to the late Giovanni and Carmela Russo. Ciro was a proud U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea shortly after the Korean War.
Ciro was a graduate of Eastern District High School in Brooklyn. He attended evening classes at John Jay College of Criminal Justice while working as a Special Investigator for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, where he worked for 32 years.
Ciro was an active member in the St. Pius X Parish in Rosedale, NY, during the 1970’s and 1980’s, serving as President of the Holy Name Society. During this same time, Ciro organized countless fundraisers, helped the nuns of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, and served as a church usher for the Sunday Children’s Mass of St. Pius X. He moved to Heritage Hills in 2000 where he lived until his death. He was a past president of Heritage Hills Condo 20 as well as the Heritage Hills Garden Club.
Ciro is the beloved husband of Angelina (Aniano) and is the loving father of Donna Russo of Manhattan, NY and Karen (Gerald) Frieri of Somers, NY. He is the devoted grandfather of Briana Frieri of Washington, DC. Ciro is survived by several nieces and nephews. Ciro was a selfless and giving individual. He was full of hope; he was extremely kind and always optimistic. Ciro lived his life cherishing family and friends and his greatest accomplishment was recognizing the best in everyone. Nothing was more enjoyable to him, than having people in his home for dinner. His greatest joy in life was retiring in 1999, to help care for his granddaughter.
