I first met Robert when I was 14 years old and had reached out to him about becoming my riding instructor. Robert, after coolly pulling up in his Mercedes, entered the barn to inform me that not only was my horse too covered in mud and dirt, but so was I! I must admit our first interaction was a bit intense, but what I soon learned about Robert is that: 1) he can be bribed with sweets (I always went with fresh baked banana bread), and 2) if you worked hard the dirt was forgotten.
Robert used to tell me stories about his younger years as a teacher, and his classroom style methods must have never left him since after every ride Robert would give me a new book to read and report to him on at the end of the week. My favorite part of those books was finding little pictures Robert would leave in them— likely with the very purpose of having me find them. Every time I’d find a picture, I’d bring it to our next lesson and Robert would go on to spend half an hour, telling me all about how he and that horse had “kicked the competition’s butts.” With everything Robert taught me, he loved to encourage me to “play hookey” and come to the barn since “who needs academics when we’re headed to the Olympics!”
In the last year, Robert gave me input on college applications and consistently sent me photos of his brand new puppy Gigi who always looks too cute not to distract me from my studies.
Robert was the most dedicated and kind teacher I’ve ever had; he will be dearly missed by Elvis and me.
