Obituary of Barry A. Kassel, M.D.

Barry Andrew Kassel, 72, of Pound Ridge, NY, died January 21, 2020 surrounded by family. Born July 16, 1947 to Helene and Nathan Kassel of Queens, NY. Brother of Gail Kassel Grisanti. After spending his formative years in White Plains, NY, Barry was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University in State College, PA. His time there cemented his interest in pursuing medicine, leading him to Medical School at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Barry married Penny Berke Kassel for a short time. The couple had Barry’s first son, Scott David Kassel. After graduating, Barry began his surgical residency at Hartford Hospital, where he met Lynn Barry Kassel, the love of his life. The pair married and moved to Pound Ridge, NY. Where they raised their next three children, Brett Marcus Kassel, Lara Kassel Nayor and Daniel Nathan Kassel. Although having four children spread over 16 years, Barry always had time and love for each. The family took scores of vacations. Barry particularly loved exploring America’s national parks and instilled in his children a respect and love for nature and the environment. Barry thrived as Chief of Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, NY where he practiced as a general surgeon for 33 years. He was chosen as one of the top surgeons in New York State year after year. He earned the reputation of putting his patients at ease with his warmth, kindness, expertise and exceptional bedside manner. Barry’s generosity knew no bounds. The number of friends and family members he helped through the years was countless. Through all of the professional success and drive to help others, what was truly most important to him was his family. In his last years he was able to witness the marriage of three of his children and the birth of three grandchildren, which had always been his dream. He was a thoughtful man whose insight and intelligence drove him to explore the world and the world of medicine. His legacy is in the lives of those he healed and their families, and most of all, in his own family who will miss him dearly but cherish countless memories, stories, and time spent together. There will be a Memorial Gathering celebrating the life of Dr.Barry Kassel Sunday January 26th 2020 from 11am to 3pm at the family home.
