This Mountain of a man helped me and my two brothers get full scholarships in football. He literally drove each of us home from practice over a three year period. He was a great leader on the football field, a brilliant tactician who as a player you always knew he was plaing some kind of 4 d chess. Most of all was his kindness off the field that I will remember. A selfless man who always gave back. We miss you coach J! Tex...

Harry Johnson was a remarkable coach and easily the best coach I ever had.
In my senior year at Westlake High 1969/70 during football practice Coach Johnson said "Darby if you don't make the basketball team I want you to wrestle" . I had never wrestled in my life and was pretty confident I would make the basketball team, so I promised him if I was cut, I would. Turns out he knew something I didn't know and, after I was cut, I felt I had to give wrestling a try.
By the way, the previous year, under Coach Johnson, the wrestling team had gone undefeated and was considered one of the best teams in the County. So for that one season I learned everything I would ever learn about wrestling from Coach.
That year my record was 25-1-1. My only loss a referee decision. I won the Section One tournament but I did not go to the States because it conflicted with Guys and Dolls, the high school musical I was in. That gives you some idea of how important wrestling was to me... not very!
What was important to me? My teammates, my school and especially Harry. I was so inspired by the confidence he had in me that I would go into matches to win the match for him. It was crucial to me that Harry be proud of me and I could not tolerate disappointing him. I have often wondered what the secret sauce was that Harry had that made him such a fantastic coach. It didn't matter the sport if he was coaching; his teams always did well. I think it was his ability to convey how much confidence he had in you. I would think, "Well, if he thinks I can do it then I guess I can." And, if you didn't succeed, there was always next time.
There was nothing phony about him. He was an exceptional teacher and coach and I am forever thankful I was able to have the life experience of being coached by the best coach ever!

Coach Johnson was an inspirational leader who I still remember to this day despite not seeing him since 1994. He played a part in my develop as a young man and have been grateful since. I’m truly sad that we have lost such a selfless person but know that his impact will live on in all that he’s influenced. RIP coach

My Brother was a mentor for me as a sibling, as a husband, father, and Teacher and Coach. He will always be a part of me. I saw him play in all his High School sports. My Father took me to Cornell College to see him play football.
I went thru High School with the nickname "Little Harry".
Because of 21 years of wonderful family reunions, we got even closer. Sandie and I traveled to New York to visit on numerous occasions. They showed us many wonderful sites of New York. We went to Broadway plays, Football game at Penn State, Army, Navy, and the University of Connecticut. We went to Gregs football practices and games as well.. A highlight for me was a trip to New York with my brother Gary for Harry's 80th Birthday.
Harry you will be greatly missed. Job Well Done!! RIP Love You!

Cindy, Greg and I (Sheryl) were blessed to have Harry Johnson as our father and wonderful memories of a life well lived. From childhood, I remember trips every other summer to Illinois to see his family with his 7 siblings and our many cousins, every time we took a different route on the drive out, I remember Niagara Falls, Pittsburgh, Football Hall of Fame in Canton (and the air conditioning argument between Harry and Mary). My dad ran a summer camp in Thornwood where we went for many summers, lots of great memories. I got closer to my dad in his retirement. He and my mom were so wonderful when I had my children Charlie and Justin and struggled to balance family and career. They came up regularly and baby sat, helped plant spring flowers, decorate Christmas trees. He loved his grandchildren so much and they all adored him. He spent quality time with each of them. Children and animals loved my father, he had a wonderful soul and my mother often spoke of his inner goodness. As my brother mentioned, my father was a holy man, he loved God, went to church daily and said the rosary after mass (my mom always commented he was the only man). While my heart aches with the thought that I will not be able to talk to him, seek his advice, hug or kiss him again here on earth, I know we were so lucky to have him for almost 86 years and that he went straight to heaven where he will watch over us. I love you dad with all my heart.

Harry was my father he took me everywhere when I was a boy. His football and wrestling practices games and tournaments. That time spent with him will always be with me. For two years I got to coach with him at Westchester CC. He built the foundation of my coaching career. After he retired he came down and helped me coach my athletes loved him. His religious faith was so strong and I know he’s with God but I will miss him. He was a great man ❤️

My heart is heavy with the loss of uncle Harry. I know he is home with our Lord and that makes it easier and knowing we will have the best family reunions in heaven!! I’m grateful for all the years we joined the “Johnson 8” for these reunions. They are now down to the Johnson 4. Uncle Harry had this huge infectious smile that made you feel so good!! He was the best example of a loving family man. He loved aunt Mary with all his heart and it was so obvious❤️ Till we meet again for that family reunion in heaven....Love you uncle Harry❤️

Harry and Mary Ann were fantastic hosts to Art and I when we visited them though Angela and Manny. We stayed at their house and Harry cooked wonderfully tasty meals for us. Harry was a great guy! We know he has gone home to his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I will truly miss Coach Johnson. We have sporadic contact after I left NY but it was always warm and friendly. He coached me in wrestling at Westlake which carried over to my time at Rye. When I started coaching at Edgemont then at Madawaska ME he helped this rookie immeasurably. He was a terrific soul and the world will be lesser without him.

When Harry was making his Cursillo weekend Angela and I went to pick him up and bring him. He was killing time trying not to come with us. I joked with him to GET IN THIS CAR. He finally did and we all laughed in the Car the whole way there. Needless to say he did in fact have a wonderful Cursillo weekend. We will all miss Harry. But know he is rejoicing with His Lord
