When my softball team suddenly folded Herb called me and asked if I wanted to play for him. Talk about awkward, going from a loud-mouthed competitor to a loud-mouthed teammate. But Herb not only made me feel at home on the field, he truly cared about me off the field as well. He was thoughtful, wise, and sincere, and loved his baseball family and his real family.

Rest in Peace Uncle Herb - all the women who have had the pleasure of playing on the "10-4s" will never forget hearing your voice each Spring announcing "batting practice open." You will be missed more than you know. Rest in peace and thank you for many decades of fun, sport and friendship.

Saturday was a sad day for me. I have so many fond memories of Herbie, from my days at King Lumber with the endless stories of growing up in Maine, to giving job site directions from landmarks that haven't existed in years, to the glory days of Golden Bridge (pre-684) . But my greatest memories of Herbie are from the softball field and after the games in the parking lot. After one championship win I have the memory of Herbie standing in the trunk of my car with a Schaefer beer in hand singing Louis Prima songs. What a great day. He was truly one of a kind a very special guy. I will miss him deeply. Chuck
