The Ven. Malcolm M Barnum, Archdeacon & Business Executive
The Ven. Malcolm McGregor Barnum, Archdeacon Emeritus of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, a management consultant and marketing executive, died peacefully at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, January 17, 2018. He was 91.
Archdeacon Barnum, known to all as “Mac,” was a native of Detroit, Michigan, graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949, from the Stanford/INSEAD Advanced Management Program in Fountainbleau, France in 1968, and from the Southwark Ordination Program, London, in the Anglican Church in 1975. He also served in the United States Navy from 1945-48.
Archdeacon Barnum was an executive at the Campbell-Ewald Advertising Agency in Detroit (1952-1965), Rockwell International in Pittsburgh (1965-1972) and Louis Allen Associates in London and New York (1972-1979). In 1979, he founded Performex Inc., a management consulting business based in Greenwich, Connecticut. Ordained as an Episcopal Deacon in 1986, he became Archdeacon in 1992 and was named “Emeritus” the following year. Throughout his ministry and professional business life, he was known locally, nationally and internationally for his creative and inspiring educational programs responding to conditions of extreme need in the world. He served as a Board member of the Presiding Bishop’s Fund – now “Episcopal Relief & Development”- creating many programs that continue today. He was also a Fellow, as well as President, of the Servant Leadership Society. Until his recent retirement, he continued to consult with religious and non-profit organizations, and also maintained an active local ministry with Inspirica in Stamford, as well as area shelters and nursing homes.
Archdeacon Barnum is survived by his wife Elena, his daughter Kathryn B. (Barry) Oches of Athens, Ohio, his son The Rt. Rev. Thaddeus R. Barnum (Erilynne) of Pawleys Island, SC, his stepson Tyler E.K. Maulsby (Corinne) of Brooklyn, NY, his sister Barbara McCollister of Buena Vista, Co, 5 grandchildren: Sean Barnum, Lindsay (Mark) Scheunke, Kristi (Lee) Fischer, Molly (Ralph) Mordocco, Sam Oches (Katie), 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased in 2012 by his son Malcolm McGregor, Jr. and, in 2008 by his infant great-grandson, Noah Scheunke.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 7th, 2018 @ 11 AM @ St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Bedford, NY
