Dear Karen,
We were most distressed to hear of the health problems that Demetrios has suffered in the past several months. It was even more distressing to hear of his passing. Please accept our deepest condolences.
For many years we had the pleasure of visiting him weekly or more often at the diner, where he greeted us with his unique smile and a big hug. Demetrios was like a member of the family to us. We always enjoyed his company and that sparkle in his eye when he spoke about you and his children and shared pictures of the grandchildren on his iPhone.
We enjoyed many conversations with Dimitri on numerous topics, as he expressed his views emphatically, but with logical justification. He was, indeed, a very intelligent person who unfortunately did not have the good luck to be in a situation where his intellect could have been used to its fullest capacity.
Please extend our sympathies to your family. Perhaps we can take solace in the possibility that he is now in a better place.
