Obituary of Hans Apelles

Hans L. Apelles, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend - passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his faithful loving family on Thursday November 24, 2022 at the age of 88.

Hans was born October 8, 1934 in Bredenbek, Germany, The son of Frederick Apelles and Emma Siems Apelles.

Hans completed his school years in Germany and started his masonry apprenticeship there as well. Hans then moved to America in 1952 and continued his apprenticeship in masonry/carpentry. Hans became a Master Mason in the Bricklayers local Union No. 5, as well as a self-taught Master Carpenter. Hans met the love of his life, Martha Antony Apelles, at a social dance in NY. They were married in 1957 and remained deeply and devotedly in love with each other during their 57-year marriage.

Hans served our country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1957 and remained in service until 1963 where he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.

Hans will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a devoted family man. He absolutely adored his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. When Hans smiled at you it felt like the sun was shining on you. He was eloquent, charming, wise, and compassionate. Everyone who met Hans loved him.

Hans was intelligent and inventive. His hobbies included field target, bee keeping, and mechanical engineering. He designed field target guns for the Crossman gun company. Hans was a fantastic cook, his Sunday German dinners brought the family closer. 

Hans was predeceased by his wife: Martha Apelles of Somers, NY; his parents: Emma & Friedrich Apelles of Bredenbek, Germany; His siblings: Heinz Apelles of Bredenbek, Germany, Fritz Apelles of Pine Bush, NY and Edith Obermeier of Bredenbek, Germany. And a Son-in-Law: Robert Paulsen of Ossining, NY.

Hans is survived by his children: Raymond Apelles (Diane) of Kingston, NY; John Apelles of New Rochelle, NY; Rosalie Paulsen (Robert) of Kingston NY.

Grandchildren: Rachel diVincenzo (Adam) of Delmar, NY; Cody Talbott (Joseph) of Pleasant Valley, NY.

Siblings: Dolly Moeller (Guenter) of Lewes, Delaware and Herta Pohlmann (Alfred) of Bredenbek, Germany. And several devoted nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at the Funeral Home on on December 2nd at 6:00pm.

The family will be gathering at 11:00am at Rose Hills Memorial Park Office, 101 Mill Street, Putnam Valley, NY 10579 on Saturday, December 3^rd for the committal service.
