Obituary of Edward Mario Vigliano, MD

Edward Mario Vigliano, MD, devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on February 24, 2023 in his beloved home in Pound Ridge, NY at the age of 85. His gentle, patient, caring manner will always be remembered.

Edward was born on April 6, 1937 in the Bronx where he grew up as an only child with his parents Mary and Mario Vigliano. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucille, at the age of twenty-one and recently celebrated their 64th anniversary.

Ed received his B.S. degree in 1957 from City College of New York and his M.D. from NYU – Bellevue Medical Center in 1961. He then went on to his residency at Montefiore Hospital.

From 1965–67 Ed proudly served as a Captain in the US Air Force (Medical Corps) based at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama.  He continued on as a Research Fellow in Hematology at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center from 1967–68, publishing several research articles.

He then went on to practice for thirty-five years as a well-respected Hematologist with the prominent Mount Kisco Medical Group where his patients sought him out for his gentle, caring manner. He retired in 2002.

As an avid New York Yankees fan, Ed enjoyed many games as a teenager from the bleachers of Yankee Stadium, including the first time Mickey Mantle played shortstop on September 9, 1953, as well as bringing his children to the 1977 All-Star Game.

Ed had a passion for running, including completing five marathons, and enjoyed the couple of weeks of his vacation every summer in Nantucket training on the dirt roads of Madaket and riding the waves at Surfside Beach with his children. He was also an avid classical guitarist, a staunch film buff who loved playing Charlie Chaplin’s films for his children through his 8mm projector, and was well-versed in Greek history and mythology.

In his retirement he continued his love of caring for people by volunteering at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, NY. He also pursued his passions for billiards, painting and the Italian language, taking classes at the renowned Founder’s Hall of Ridgefield, CT.

Ed is survived by his loving wife Lucille of almost 65 years, his four children Edward (Carmela), Christine (Phil), James (Huong), and Peter (Connie), and his six grandchildren, Nicholas, John, Erica, Robert, Sophia and Matthew.

His family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2023 from  2:30-6pm at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 10am at St. Patrick’s Church in Bedford, NY. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 95 Kings Highway, New Rochelle, NY.
